Much westerners today recognize Christmas. Really, many people who are not Christian celebrate Christmas! However, only a few people are knowledgeable on all of the interesting trivia about the most popular holiday in the world.

For instance, did you know that finding a spider web on the morning of Christmas is thought to be an oman of good tidings in the Ukraine? Or that the thought of kissing below a mistletoe hails from Scandinavia? How about the fact that hiding things in Christmas pudding comes from the middle ages? There are many such interesting trivia nearly no one is aware of these days. Here are some particularly interesting areas.

The History of Christmas

Although Christmas is now known to be a holiday of the coming of Christ into this world, a similar holiday was marked at the same time before his birthday. The time around Christmas also marks the winter solstice on the Roman calendar, that was marked in ancient Rome with a few other winter festivals. Other Christmas traditions, like the use of the xmas tree, have much to do with winter solstice celebrations. For instance, non believers would bring evergreen trees inside at the time of the winter solstice to mark the return of life which would arrive when winter came to an end and spring came around the corner. So you see, Christmas has a curious history!

Eating Around Christmas

Lots of people eat Christmas pudding, and this dates back a very long time to when people used to eat spiced porridge. Have you ever considered Buche de Noel, a really popular traditional Christmas cake? As you are no doubt familiar, this cake was first made in France and the name means "Christmas log". Naturally most people in English speaking countries call this a Yule Log. The cake is usually a rolled sponge cake, containing Marzipan and meringue. This dates back to very old times.

How about candy canes? Did you know that sugar was really expensive many years ago? For that reason, candy was only consumed on very special occasions like Christmas. That's how the tradition of consuming candy canes around Christmas came to be. It's also likely that people ate sugar based products around lent way back during the time of Christ, because sugar was thought to have medicinal properties. I bet you didn't know that piece of trivia.

And have you considered Christmas cookies? Well, they've been a part of celebrations going back way before the bit of Christ. Cookies have been loved for centuries, additionally they have been eaten around the Christmas holidays since the 1500's. And did you know, they were eaten in the USA in the 1600's!
